Commonly Asked Questions

Embarking on therapy is a significant milestone in our mental health path. At our facility, we provide a safe, empathetic, and private environment for our patients. Every patient’s journey is unique, and it’s normal to have questions. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers to assist you in determining your next step.

What is therapy?

Like going to the doctor when you’re sick, it’s good to talk with a therapist if you’re going through a hard time or feeling down. Even if you’re not going through a hard time right now, you can also talk to a therapist if you want to understand your feelings better or learn how to deal with stressful situations. A therapist is there to talk to you about your mental health and help you work towards feeling better. Some therapists write notes down while you’re talking to stay on track and make sure nothing is missed. It is the therapist’s job to listen to you without judging you and to help you think about things in a new way. The therapist has special training to talk about depression, anxiety, grief, and many other emotions and conditions.

What do I talk about in therapy?

You can talk about anything you want in therapy, but your therapist will guide you to talk about things related to feelings, emotions, and behaviors. The. therapist will ask you questions about your past and your goals for the future. They will help you feel heard and understood. It’s okay if you’re not sure what to talk about at first. The therapist will help you!

What does the first appointment look like?

At the first appointment, the therapist will introduce herself to you and talk about confidentiality. Confidentiality in therapy means that everything you tell your therapist stays private between the two of you. The therapist will only disclose information to others if there are concerns about your safety, the safety of others, or reports of abuse involving children, the elderly, or people with disabilities.. The therapist will ask you questions to get to know you better. You only have to share what you are comfortable talking about! The therapist never wants you to feel uncomfortable or uneasy.

How often do I meet with my therapist?

Most people meet with their therapist once a week, but you have the flexibility to discuss alternative frequencies with your therapist based on your preferences. Sessions with a therapist are usually one hour long, but that time can be adjusted if you feel it is too long or too short.

How will therapy help me feel better?

Many people feel better just by talking about things that are on their mind or things they are worried about. Your therapist will do more than just listen to you, though! They will help you work on coping skills, or ways to deal with your emotions or tough situations. Therapists work with you to figure out what works best for you.

What if I’m still anxious about going to therapy?

You are welcome to stop by the Willows Way office first to meet your therapist and see her office. Michelle would be happy to introduce herself and answer and questions you may have. She wants to be sure you feel comfortable and safe during therapy.
